People who have become homeless or experienced life crises (eg DV, abuse, frequent moving, belongings destroyed or taken) often experience difficulties with finances. 

Some of the challenges people face include:

  • Housing or rental debts
  • Some coping strategies such as AOD use make budgeting difficult
  • Some people have not learnt the lifeskill of how to manage a budget
  • Pressure, or feelings of obligation to look after extended family or friends may result in giving away of money or food
  • Feelings of guilt may mean that unaffordable purchases are be made to “make up” for, or cover up difficulties
  • Government assistance can be extremely difficult to live on, as it provides for ‘survival’ only
